2019 Highlights

In 2019 we were contacted by a company then called Aurora Wind Energy. They were not getting the results from their current vertical axis wind turbines that they expected. We provide them with a Wind Shark 20 to try and they were very happy with turbine performance. The pole is monitored by an objective third party and as you can see in the output graphs below that the Wind Shark made more power more days of the month than the previous turbine they were using which is at least double the size.

The Wind Shark made 3 times the power of the previous turbine in the same location as the turbine they previously had at the same location. We have since become the main supplier of turbines for Aurora.

A lot has been going on over the course of the year here at Headwind Technologies Ltd. We have been designing and testing our Wind Shark turbines for a variety of applications and exploring various methods of manufacturing while trying to come up with the best combinations of hardware to go along with them.

So we wanted to give you a bit of a recap of what's been happening, what are latest plans are, and where we are going in the future with the Wind Shark's development.

We've had great success with the 3D printed versions of our Wind Shark 20 and learned a great deal about the features and benefits of the design. (20" dimension turbine with a 200watt generator) we have been exploring the scalability of the wind shark to better suit the needs of each application.
Picture
What do the numbers on the windshark mean?
The numbers indicate the height of the turbine blades in inches. ex. Windshark 20 = 20".

WS20 -Reef Shark
The 20" tall Reef Shark was designed to best suit 12v applications such as marine, RV use, and street lights.  It's 20" height fits easily through the door of most RV's.

WS30 - Mako Shark
The 30" Mako Shark is currently being tested with a 1kW generator. This version is better suited for 24v - 48v systems. These are for use on tiny homes, cottages, or in telecommunication.

WS40 - Tiger Shark
The 40" Tiger Shark will be developed for residential uses.

WS60 - Great White Shark
The 60" Great White Shark will be used for light industrial such as greenhouses.

WS120 - Megaledon
The 120" Megaledon will be designed for disaster relief where much power is required.

Like all other businesses on the planet, we were severely affected by the the Covid 19 pandemic. Our mass manufacturer became too busy producing PPE and we were unable to get components from other parts of the world.

We were able to use some of that time to continue R&D on the 30" Mako Shark.
Now that the WS30 R&D phase has ended and some borders are opening up we are back into production of the 3D printed Wind Shark 20 line.

Currently sales of the WS20s have been limited to our early investors and to supplying our partners at Aurora (now E2sE) for their commercial lighting trailers but we will be taking pre orders for the Wind Shark 20s from the general public for delivery in 2021 very soon.

  1. With the addition of the large scale 3d printer, Headwind Technologies is now printing full sized wind turbine blades, the blade has been further refined to make it stronger, lighter, and easier to assemble;  making the whole turbine weighing less than 10 pounds.
  2. Headwind has developed an adapter that incorporates a quick release system, fitting multiple generators to accelerate the testing process.
  3. We have a parametric model of our latest blade suitable for injection molding in preparation for mass production.
  4. Several charge controllers and generator combinations have been tested with the "Wind Shark 20" blade, and have stress tested it up to 100 km/hr (60 mph) winds with no noise, vibration, or damage to any components.
  5. The "Wind Shark 20" is suitable to power up to a 400 Watt generator, where as the "Wind Shark 30" (which is currently under development) will be able to push a 500 Watt generator.
(Video above shows the "Wind Shark 20" attached to a 500 Watt generator, charging a 24 Volt battery bank.)

Thank you for your support!

Moving Forward!

A lot has been going on here at Headwind since our last posting.
Here is a brief breakdown of the progress to date:

We sourced an offshore generator to pair with our turbine, accelerating the ability to get into the market as soon as possible.

We've tested the latest generator, and create a torque measurement device to help determine how the blade and generator functioned under various load conditions.

We have been talking to suppliers and testing new materials with diverse molding properties. In order to test these, we had to create new sets of silicone mold liners to handle the heat generated by the new material.

We  took the opportunity to
modify our outer mold jackets in order to speed up the molding, de-molding, and roto-mold process.

We researched a lot of large format 3D printers and finally found one that met all of our requirements. We are currently undergoing the refining process for best results. This printer will allow us to have rapid prototyping for full scale turbine blades;  Once established we will be exploring materials such as: Hemp, ASA, or Carbon Fiber.

We created a 3D scanner and are planning to scan and 3D print existing components in-house to make the transition to injection molding as cost effective as possible.

We have approached developers in injection molding for future mass production once further methodology has been formed.

Thanks for all your support!

We give our great thanks once again to all our community of supporters, who have joined the team and to say: "We want a change, and it starts with us."

The founders here have been working tirelessly since the success of the Vested campaign. Designs and parts for the generator were formulated, tested, refined, and calibrated relentlessly. We found that while our generator design works very well in low winds it cannot yet efficiently transition to take advantage of the higher wind speeds. We recently enlisted the services of an expert in battery technology, to review our generator and suggest ways to further optimize it.

While we do this, we have ordered a generator that we anticipate to be a good match for the turbine; if all criteria are met, this will get the turbine in your hands that much sooner!

Our blade production mold is complete and we are testing materials for the roto-molding process. Many materials that we have tried thus far still break down over time under UV radiation.

Alternatively, we have currently placed a down payment on a 3D printer capable of printing the turbines at full scale; which gives us the opportunity to print light weight blades from recyclable materials. The printer is still many weeks away however, as this is a new design and they are still updating the software.

The present objectives:
- Test the new generator when it arrives.
- Continue testing new materials, then begin replication of the blades for market.
- Assemble the 3D printer when it arrives, and printing the turbine full size in various materials such as PetG or Carbon Fibre.

Exciting times! We are that much closer to bringing the "Wind Shark" turbine to your roof tops, thanks to all of your support!

More updates to come.

Thank you!

Here are the latest circuit boards and print tests! Now that we have the power optimization chips in place, we'll be hooking them up to the onboard charge controller to bring them to life!

Along with the heart of the turbine, we have been exploring 3D printing after digitizing the blade mold! This is a simple print test, but we aim to be producing a larger scale version with a Eco-friendly material that not only makes it better for the environment, but also good on your pocket book!

More updates to come! We couldn't do this without all of you and your partnership for a greener future.

Thank you,

Scans and Circuit Boards

First off, we would like to thank you all for your amazing response and support in these first few weeks of the campaign launch. In 2 weeks alone, we're nearly half way to our goal, and that's all thanks to you!

Here are the latest developments on the "Wind Shark" Wind Turbine:
The turbine blade has been sent to Calgary where it is currently being scanned and digitally optimized for the best quality. The work is being performed by Rapid 3D, whom we have worked with in the past and they have produced excellent results for us.

Once the blade is in a .STL (stereo lithography) format we will be able to send it out and get quotes on molds for commercial production.  There are a number of ways we can produce the blades and the quotes will determine which way will be the most effective.

We have also just received the latest circuit boards for our generator.
These boards are designed to maximize power output at various wind speeds. Now that we have their dimensions, we are able to proceed to design an refine the weather proof housing.

We'll keep you all posted as we embark on this journey together!

How you guys can help is to continue to share the Headwind Technologies Facebook videos/posts or the Headwind Technologies Website. The more people we can engage with and join the team, the faster we can get this turbine into your hands!

Thank you all for your amazing support, every day is a step closer to bringing a greener future to our communities and planet.
